Fiat has been revealed to have the best CO2 average in 2007 amongst the Top 10 European car makers.
It is one thing to have one environmentally friendly car in a range, but the real measure of a car maker's commitment to the environment is its average carbon dioxide emissions right across its range, averaged across all the cars it has sold and Fiat has been revealed to have the best CO2 average in 2007 amongst the top ten European car makers.
In a league table compiled by JATO Dynamics, the world leader for independent consultancy and research in the automotive field, Fiat tops the table with an average of just 137.3 g/km, ahead of Peugeot (141.9 g/km), Citroen (142.2 g/km), Renault (146.4 g/km), Toyota (148.8 g/km), Ford (149.1 g/km), Opel/Vauxhall (152.9 g/km), Volkswagen (161.7 g/km), BMW (176.7g/km) and Mercedes-Benz (188.4 g/km).
Fiat's performance in Australia is no less compelling. The Fiat 500 1.3 JTD is, quite simply, the most economical car on the market, bar none, with a combined fuel consumption of just 4.2 litres per 100 km. The Fiat Punto 1.2 is the second highest rated car on the Australian market for overall emissions performance, just half a point behind the first placed car but the Fiat costs less than half the price to buy compared to its hybrid rival for the top spot. The newly launched Fiat Ritmo is also amongst the most economical and cleanest cars in its market sector.
Nor are these cars boring economy cars. As well as offering class leading fuel consumption and low emissions, they are exciting, stylish and chic, as well as fun to drive in the best Italian tradition.
“The results of this important analysis reward Fiat's ongoing commitment to finding innovative solutions to reduce levels of polluting emissions and CO2,” explains Edward Butler, General manager for Fiat cars in Australia “Fiat's aim is always to stay as close as possible to people's real needs, and its commitment does not end here. Irrespective of what legislation is implemented by governments around the world Fiat's aim is still to achieve the lowest average adjusted level of CO2 emissions, so that all our customers make a contribution to the environment, not a select few driving one model.”
“Fiat intends to achieve this result by introducing an action plan on engines and transmissions, in addition to the use of Eco Drive, an innovative application developed with Microsoft that is able - via the USB Port of the versatile Blue&Me system - to analyse motorists' driving styles, helping them to optimise behaviour in terms of fuel consumption and hence emissions.”
Fiat is one of the motoring brands providing the best response, anywhere in the world, to the need to limit the impact of transport on the environment. Fiat is proposing specific solutions that are within the reach of everyone and are available today to achieve this significant goal. This is borne out by Fiat products already present on the market; by its research and development plans; by sustainable mobility initiatives promoted in conjunction with governments - and investments in new product development.
Fiat is a world leader in the production of compact cars that are, by definition, the most respectful of the environment: For example, two years ahead of European legislation, the toughest standards in the world, the Fiat 500 and the Fiat Ritmo have already been introduced with Euro 5 Standard power units - both petrol and diesel. By the end of 2009, most engines in the entire Fiat range will be to the Euro 5 standard.
Fiat is also the first manufacturer to offer the MultiJet technology that drives all new-generation diesel cars, and the Company is a world leader in the field of methane-driven production cars with more than 50,000 sold last year in Italy. Fiat believes that methane propulsion systems are currently the most appropriate and readily available technology for resolving pollution problems in urban areas. This is because the use of methane has positive implications in terms of environmental benefits - reduction of approximately 23% in CO2 emissions and reduction of PM to practically zero - and as well as in financial terms.
Fiat, a leader in this technology, is the first manufacturer to offer Natural Power in its low-emissions range, a wide array of vehicles with methane-petrol dual fuel systems which are able to meet the mobility requirement of an extensive category of users, including the trade sector. Currently these categories embrace the Doblò, Doblò Cargo, Multipla, Panda, Panda Van and in the Punto due to go on sale by the end of the year in Europe.
As it continues its quest for alternative fuels, Fiat is also downsizing its diesel and petrol engine vehicles, as demonstrated by the new 1.4 T-Jet and MultiJet families. In particular, the adoption of new-generation turbochargers, combined with smaller capacity engines, allows Fiat to achieve performance levels that are comparable to or even better than higher capacity power units, but with lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The first pictures of the new sporty "Mi.To" from Alfa Romeo
Alfa Romeo has released the first pictures of Mi.To, its all-new ultra-compact, ultra-sporty small car, which will make its world debut in June before arriving in Australia in the middle of 2009.
The much anticipated Mini-Alfa Romeo has been touted by some motoring pundits as a replacement for the much-loved Alfasud, the benchmark small car from the 1970s that redefined small car performance with a class leading chassis, peppy performance and crisp styling. However, the new Alfa Romeo Mi.To is even smaller, with the Alfasud built to compete with cars such as the Volkswagen Golf, making today's Alfa Romeo 147 its true successor. Additionally, with its five door hatchback and wagon versions, the Alfasud, despite its performance and styling, was designed to compete with mainstream models.
The Mi.To, at just over four metres long and 1.72 metres wide, not only sits in the class below the Alfa 147 and is predecessor, it is resolutely a prestige small car that is a performance and style design, intensely focused on the driver, drawing on the iconic styling of the Alfa Romeo 8C and offering a true performance orientated experience.
The Alfa Romeo Mi.To's family heritage can be seen in the grille, headlights and LED taillights, along with the frameless side windows endowing it with a coupe appearance. It could genuinely be called a mini-Alfa Romeo 8C.
Technologically, the Alfa Romeo Mi.To promises to be highly innovative with the debut of the Alfa Romeo DNA system, the next generation of electronic stability control and a first in this class. Controlling the engine, brakes, steering response, suspension and gearbox, the Mi.To can be set to offer a super-sporting dynamic range of responses, a normal setting for city use and a special high grip setting for snow, ice and mud conditions. This remarkable new technology will set a new safety standard when allied to VDC, ABS brakes and a design developed to achieve the highest EuroNCAP crash test rating.
A full range of engines, both petrol and diesel, will be offered in Mi.To and they will range from 90 to 155 bhp.
And the name? Mi.To references, Alfa Romeo's history as the first two letters of Alfa Romeo's spiritual home, Milan, plus the first two letters of Torino or Turin in its Anglicized spelling, the industrial Italian powerhouse where it will be built.
Full Australian pricing and specifications will be announced when it goes on sale in Australia in the middle of 2009.
